Healthy Food Choices While Traveling

How to make healthy food choices while traveling

As you may already know, I love to travel. Going to a new place is fun and exciting! I also LOVE food! But eating too much bad foods is not only horrible on my gut but also on my goals. I have the moderation mindset and count macros. Eating foods in moderation means, I do not think it is horrible to have a half a donut and some eggs for breakfast or having dessert after dinner. Moderation is not for everyone! I know this works well for me, but it wasn’t always this way. Since I workout 6 times a week, I am OK with moderation. And I definitely do not miss a workout when on vacation! I love working out, obviously. Haha! But seriously, working out helps me with my anxiety and my anxiety is at on all time high when we are traveling. So how do I find healthy food choices while traveling?

 

My healthy food choices while traveling tips are:

  • Bring your own snacks
  • Seek out healthy food options
  • COFFEE!!
  • Stay hydrated

Snacks

The hardest part of traveling, aside from the actual traveling aspect of it, is making healthy food choices! Well, my kids are HUGE snackers… Honestly, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. But hey, as a mom, we are just trying to keep everyone happy and healthy, right?? So how do we keep the kids happy and fulfilled while traveling?

It seems like we always have tons of snacks. I am fine with this because I need to eat as well. And I like a variety as do the kids. I’m not going to lie, there has been times when I packed a ton of what I thought the kids liked and they didn’t touch them! Haha! Story of every parent’s life! So we pack our own healthy snacks!

 

Here is a list of what snacks we packed for our latest vacation:

  • Go-Go Squeeze
  • Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
  • Clif Z Kids Organic Bars
  • Clif Bars
  • Gardetto Rye Chips
  • Goldfish
  • Quest Cookies

 

It seems like that is a lot of choices, but hey, some of those are for Jacob and me, too! Snacks are great for on the airplane or waiting at the gate. They are great when hanging out at the hotel or on the shuttle. We like to have snacks to keep everyone happy and healthy. The best part of packing them ourselves is it is MUCH cheaper! I’m sorry but paying $3 for 1 applesauce pouch for my 3 year old is a bit too rich for my blood! Haha! And I don’t want to take the cheaper approach in the airport and buy chips. So I like to bring my own! We save money and we can have a healthy food choices while traveling! But sometimes, I need a meal. I can’t get by only with eating snacks.

 

Healthy meal choices

So every airport has a TON of food options. Some are healthy and some are not. So making healthy food choices while traveling through an airport can get overwhelming. But I basically go with how I feel at the moment. For example, for lunch if I want a salad, I make sure the dressing is on the side and I get grilled chicken breast with it. Or if I want a burger, I either only eat half of the bun or none at all. Sometimes, I cannot say no to fries, so I will get a small fry and a chicken salad or wrap. If a restaurant has sweet potato fries, it is always a yes from me! Haha.

 

Coffee!!

We like to leave for our destination on the first or second flight of the day! That way if there are delays or cancellations, we can still make it on the next flight. When cruising, we also like to fly in the day before the cruise is scheduled to leave, that way if there are problems, we still can make it to the ship on time! Well since we leave so early, I NEED coffee!! If you order a large caramel latte from many different coffee places, it will have 5 pumps of syrup! 5 is a crazy amount. If I need some sugar, I will ask for 2 pumps of syrup. It makes it lightly sweet, just the way I like it!

And If I have coffee on the plane I get it black because I LOVE the cookies that they have! AND eating those cookies and drinking the coffee black is the perfect amount of sugar for me. If they don’t have the cookies, I just eat my White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Clif Bar!

 

Hydration

WATER WATER WATER!! This is so difficult for a lot of people: staying hydrated. Hydration is super important. But also, who wants to spend so much money on bottled water in the airport! I know my husband doesn’t! HAHA! So we decided we would spend $10 and buy these Britta Reusable Water Bottles! How great is it to have filtered water wherever you are. Since being in a pressurized cabin can be dehydrating, it is also so important to drink water while in flight. Not only did we use these in the airport but we also used them on the ship! It was so nice to have filtered water especially when going into port! Staying hydrated is KEY to having a good travel day and vacation!
